about

Back on Tallow’s beach, South of Cape Byron, my favourite beach, I’ve written many things walking up and down those 7k’s of fine sand. We’d driven north from Sydney through the onslaught of rain that brought widespread flooding to the eastern coast. I was but a spectator as you always are on the road, wending my way through the carnage, worried still by my own problems. The rain didn’t stop for days, driving off the ocean in malign slanting sheets, I cowered in my tent and dreamt of sunnier times…

lyrics

The Flood

Are you pining for me?
Do you know how to be?
A long distance lover we shall see
I can’t understand
How she slipped through my hands
But the rain keeps coming in off the sea

Tear my heart asunder
It seems we made a blunder
When we built things up
And said they’d last forever

The rain keeps a driving
Sweet summer she ain’ t arriving
People focus only on surviving
They can’t understand
How life has slipped through their hands
But the rain keeps coming in off the sea

Tear my home asunder
It seems we made a blunder
When we took
Mother nature for granted

Please don’t cry for me
I don’t deserve sympathy
There are far worthier causes for your energy
I still don’t understand
How time slips through the hands
But the rain keeps coming in off the sea

Tear it all asunder
The lightning closes on the thunder
The levees gonna break
And we’re all headed under
Cos the rain keeps coming in off the sea
And who are we
To ask
For sympathy
